Day 13

Matthew

“Wow I have a lot of work to do, but, oh no, a fire alarm! I’d better get out of here. But, wait, no one else seems to be moving. In fact, they are not even lifting their heads.” Matthew sniffs for smoke, looks left to right for signs of flames. “This is weird. Why is no one moving? Didn’t they do fire drills in elementary school? You’re supposed to go out single file. Quietly.” Matthew turns off his computer and stands up. Surveying the room, he sees that not one employee has altered his or her behavior in any way, which is simply unbelievable because the fire alarm is deafening. Matthew considers whether to leave and be labeled a sissy or risk being burned alive. In a normal world, Matthew thinks, a job would not present such choices to a person.

But, as he is unfortunately learning, this is anything but the normal world.

About Zombies At Work

As I approach my car, my mood begins to elevate. Fresh air. Sunshine. As I feel increasingly good, I begin to wonder if I am experiencing some form of bipolarity -- if mental illness is a side effect of corporate life.

I will learn that it is. It is dangerous, can be chronic…even fatal. It is called corporate zombism.
